For the Messner family, one of the many joys of summer is spending time together at their home in California’s wine country. During the warm season, the landscape around their historic farmhouse is uniquely Californian – golden, dried grass (the Messners don’t irrigate), live oaks, buzzing bees amongst the lavender, and edible plants heavy with produce.

Labor Day is an especially wonderful time in Calistoga for the Messners, who find themselves outdoors from morning until night, playing baseball, building forts, exploring the creek, and barbecuing. Although the days are hot, there is often a whisper of cool wind amongst the trees, and in the evenings, temperatures drop low enough for cozy gatherings.

Here, we rounded up the outdoor furniture and decor pieces that bring to life their home’s outdoor spaces during the summer and the transition to fall.

A grey sectional chair
The Neighbor sectional has long been a Yardzen favorite. Made of FSC-certified teak and performance Sunbrella fabric, these sectionals work beautifully in any outdoor space. For families with kids and pets, we especially like Neighbor’s new, darker fabrics, like this gray.
A coffee table
Pair your Neighbor sectional with the matching coffee (or cocktail) table. Just like inside, a coffee table does a beautiful job at pulling an outdoor room together. Style with fresh flowers and functional details.
A striped throw pillow
We consider stripes neutral around here! This linen pillow from Portland-based Schoolhouse pairs beautifully with both light and dark couches.
An outdoor rug
Don’t knock an outdoor rug until you try one – they feel luxurious under bare feet, and they do a beautiful job of pulling together an outdoor room.

Set the Scene with Tabletop Decor

Tabletop decor always sets the mood for a fun evening at home. Holidays, like Labor Day, offer a great excuse to decorate based on a theme!

A red plaid tablecloth
Add personality to your outdoor space with the bright colors and bold patterns of Heather Taylor Home’s 100% hand woven tablecloths.
A beige serving bowl
Camp-inspired enamelware is both beautiful and functional, setting the scene for a casual, alfresco evening.
An outdoor dining table
This 7’ weathered outdoor dining table from Terrain will age beautifully. The clean, simple lines and neutral tone pairs well with any exterior style.
A jute rug
Define your outdoor dining room with a jute rug like the one underfoot at the Messner’s house.
Six gingham napkins laid overlapping each other
Add a classic, picnic-inspired touch to your tabletop with a gingham napkin. Consider contrasting the colors of your napkins and tablecloth for a fun flair.
